MEAP Information

Published February 21, 2012 under News

Students in Midland Public Schools at the elementary and middle school level took the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) test during the fall of 2011.

This year the State of Michigan has changed how the MEAP test is scored and we would like to take time to inform you of this change and provide an explanation of how your child’s test was scored. Within this letter you will find a copy of your child’s student MEAP report with the new “cut scores” applied.

The MEAP uses “cut scores” to determine if your student has a basic understanding of the subject matter being tested. Cut scores separate the results of the testing into categories, such as “proficient” and “not proficient.” For example, if the cut score on a specific test is 70%, it means that anything above that is “proficient” and anything below that is “not proficient.” If a student is reported as not proficient it does not mean that he or she isn’t gaining academic skills for his or her grade level. It means that on the day of the test, this student was not yet proficient on the material being tested.

Under the new scoring system, students have to answer a much higher number and percentage of questions correctly to be proficient. In the long run, this is a positive move for the district and our state, but short-term, the new cut scores may present some concern for our families.

As is true with school districts across the state, the new scores for your student will look considerably lower than his/her previous scores. Midland Public Schools expects this initial decline. We are working to strengthen our students through this transition by implementing ongoing school improvement and student support efforts. Also, keep in mind that the MEAP is one of several ways that we determine if a student is progressing in their academics.

If you would like to learn more about the new cut scores, please visit www.cre.mps.k12.mi.us or

http://www.mistreamnet.com/vidflv.php?who=resa121611

As we move forward with implementing the new cut scores, we are closely monitoring our students’ progress. Please rest assured that we maintain high expectations and are confident that we will continue our record of developing exceptional students who are fully prepared for academic achievement and success.

Carpenter Street School one of 123 schools named “Beating the Odds”

Published November 23, 2011 under News

The State of Michigan recently recognized Carpenter Street School as a 2011“Beating the Odds” school.  This recognition is given to a few schools across the state of Michigan that meet the following criteria; a) schools that perform above predicted levels based on risk factors, b) schools performing above a comparison group of the most demographically similar schools in the state. This is an honor that only two elementary schools in the region were rewarded.  The state’s recent recognition is a direct reflection of the daily efforts and achievements our staff, students, parents and community exhibit at Carpenter Street School.
