Vocal and general music instruction begins in first grade in the Midland Public Schools. Each year the students learn a repertoire of at least ten authentic American folk songs. These pieces are very accessible to children of all ages. Many of these songs have survived for decades, never written down, never marketed, yet loved today by children all over.

Students learn many fundamental principles of music. They work on comparatives such as:

  • faster / slower
  • higher / lower
  • longer / shorter
  • louder / softer.

They learn to match pitches, keep a steady beat and treat instruments with care and concern. All of these concepts are taught within the context of songs and music the children love.
